How to spend 24 hours in Sharjah

30 December 2021

The cultural capital of the UAE, Sharjah, is packed with activities for everyone to enjoy for multiple days on end. But if you want to make the best of a holiday in the city, or even work out how to spend a day of the weekend, we have you covered.

A great way to start your day is by heading over to the Arabian Tea House Restaurant & Café at Souq Al Shanasiyah on Corniche Street. With Emirati food – among other regional cuisines – on offer, this picturesque café is a great place to fuel up.

After a delicious meal, walk through the shaded pathways behind the café to find your way to Souq Al Arsah. Wander through the restored, historical walkways and browse the stores selling a myriad of goods, from spices to incense to old cameras, antiques, and much more.

Once you’re done, walk over to the Sharjah Art Foundation. With multiple galleries amid winding paths, the exhibitions in each of the galleries changes every few months, so it’s well worth checking out. Book your entry (for free!) in advance through the website, and you’re guaranteed a cultural experience. When you want a break, wander through the urban garden where the neighbourhood’s cats congregate or grab lunch and coffee at the Fen Café & Restaurant, which is hidden within the shaded, maze-like paths of the neighbourhood.

After lunch, hop into a car and make your way to the Rain Room – a project that fuses art and technology in a mesmerising experience. It’s an installation that allows people to walk through a room with constant rainfall without getting drenched! Motion sensors track people as they walk through the room, allowing them to experience nature without being affected by it. The walkthrough times are limited to 15 minutes per session, and only a maximum of six visitors at any one time, so do book ahead.

It’s time to drive over to the city’s latest community attraction at Madar at Aljada. There’s plenty to get involved in with the family here. Whether your kids want to practise their skateboarding skills in the purpose-built skate park or clamber across ropes and obstacles in the play area, they will be amused there. Once play and relaxation time is over, hop in your car for the 8pm movie showing at the outdoor cinema right next door, and order food right to your car from any of the food trucks dotting the landscape. Whether you want burgers, poke bowls, or just a light snack, there’s something for everyone.

If you’re up for it, drive to the Qasba to end the night. Filled with shops, restaurants and a central canal running through the spot, take a comfortable walk alongside the water and take in the twinkling lights and starry skies.

If you decide to stay in Sharjah, then the Al Bait Sharjah hotel is a great place to pick for the night. With the property housed within restored old houses, it provides a heritage-filled experience across all the facilities.

Enjoy exploring Sharjah – there’s plenty to do here!
