Things to do in Sharjah this December

December is one of the best months of the year in Sharjah. The cooler weather has just arrived, and there is a full calendar of things to see and do. Here is our pick of what’s on offer this month.
1-2 December

Al Qasba, Sharjah

UAE National Day

The National Day celebrations will be taking place over a five-day weekend this year, allowing residents and visitors plenty of...opportunity to visit the many events that are being laid on. At Al Qasba you can enjoy the Spirit of the Union by taking part in family activities such as traditional Emirati performances (Ayalla), henna painting, arts and crafts, face painting for children and much more. Between 30 November and 5 December, Al Qasba will be decorated with special lights to celebrate the occasion.

Flag Island, Sharjah

Sharjah Saturday

Join long-time Sharjah resident Alexander McNabb on his one-man mission to share the extensive culture, history and heritage ...of the UAE. His informal tour kicks off at 9am at Jones the Grocer on Flag Island, and will take in Mahatta Fort, Arabia’s Wildlife Centre, Fen Café, the Heart of Sharjah complex, Sharjah Museum of Islamic Civilisation, and Al Hisn Sharjah. There’s no need to register – either turn up at 9am, or follow social media on the day to find out where the tour has reached and join them there.

T-Serai Exhibition

It’s your last opportunity to see the T-Serai Exhibition by Azra Aksamija at the Sharjah Museum of Islamic Civilisation. Finishing on 7 December, the show consists... of a textile art installation in the form of a portable cultural shelter inspired by the tent traditions of the MENA region. Visitors to the museum can also see thousands of rare and important Islamic artifacts in this unique site on the Majarrah waterfront.

E88 Market, Al Dhaid

E88 Market

After a successful first edition last year, the E88 Market returns again in 2019, running between 15 December and 4 January. Organised by Al Jawaher Reception and Convention Centre..., E88 Market is a huge outdoor food and shopping festival that is held on the E88 road between Al Dhaid and Masafi. The area is most familiar for its Friday Market, a huge collection of roadside shops and outlets that has proved extremely popular with UAE residents. The E88 Market will include food trucks, cooking classes, arts and crafts sessions, e-games and stage shows.

18-21 December

Khalid Lagoon, Sharjah

Grand Prix of Sharjah

Formula 1 powerboat racing returns to Sharjah in mid-December for the final round of F1H20 world championship. Held on... Khalid Lagoon, the event is free to watch and also attracts thousands of spectators to the Buhairah Corniche to see high-powered catamarans reach up 220 km/h as they speed round a challenging course. This year’s event promises to be particularly exciting as there are only two contenders left challenging for the title – defending champion Shaun Torrente and Sweden’s Jonas Andersson. In the teams championship, Abu Dhabi need just 13 points to retain the title.

Al Qasba Theatre


The second edition of Sharjah’s annual festival of culture, art, music, dance, theatre, food and fashion kicks off on 19 December Al Qasba Theatre. The programme runs from 19 December to 31 December, from 10am to 8pm.

Sharjah Art Foundation

Sunset, Sunrise

Sunset, Sunrise is a retrospective exhibition of works the late artist Monir Shahroudy Farmanfarmaian. With a career spanning more than six decades, Farmanfarmaian is considered to be one of the most important Iranian artists of her time. The exhibition investigates the combination of Persian techniques and contemporary Western abstraction. More than 70 works will be on display ranging from painting, sculpture and jewellery to work on paper and collages. The exhibition, which is at Hamriya Studios, finishes on 28 December.
