The insider’s guide to Muwaileh

Now being referred to as ‘Little Brooklyn’, Muwaileh is taking advantage of its excellent location in Sharjah to attract new businesses, visitors, residents and developers. It’s now one of the fastest-growing districts in the Emirate, has everything residents need right on their doorstep, and also offers tourists plenty to see and do. Here are our top tips for living the high life in one of Sharjah’s most exciting destinations.

Muwaileh occupies a great location right in the heart of Sharjah. It is bordered by University City to the east, Al Dhaid Road to the north, Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Road to the west and the border of Dubai to the south. It is therefore perfectly suited for commutes either into Sharjah City, the northern Emirates or Dubai. Sharjah International Airport is only five minutes away by car, and Dubai International Airport is just a 15-minute drive.

As befits one of Sharjah’s fastest-growing areas, there are already quite a few shopping options – with a lot more scheduled to come online in the next couple of years. There are hundreds of small shops, supermarkets and outlets located in the main built-up part of Muwaileh, while the recently opened Safari Mall is well located on University City Road. Muwaileh will host Sharjah’s largest mall when City Centre Al Zahia opens next year, while Aljada’s Central Hub will also have a significant retail space. In addition, both of Aljada’s main tree-lined avenues will contain shops, cafes and local services. A little bit further afield are the modern and stylish Zero 6 Mall and Matajer Al Juraina, both of which are just the other side of University City.

Muwaileh has a large and growing selection of cafes and restaurants, most of which are clustered in the northern part of the district, either on or just behind University City Road. Founded by Emirati husband-and-wife team Ahmed Al Mazrouei and Nawal Al Nuaimi, Paper Fig already has a fan base from around the UAE and beyond, and has branded itself as Sharjah’s ‘ultimate foodie destination’. Fans of high-end fusion dining should try out Black Salt, while sushi lovers will be welcomed at Zushi. There are also a wide range of Indian and burger joints in the same area.

The closest large hospitals to Muwaileh are University Hospital Sharjah and University Dental Hospital Sharjah, while another will be situated in Aljada when the megaproject is complete. However, there are a wealth of smaller hospitals, clinics, pharmacies and other healthcare centres around the district. These include Thumbay Hospital and Access Clinic, both of which are located on University City Road, as well as nearby Gulf Children Medical Centre and Beverly Hills Specialised Clinic. There are also a cluster of clinics located on Maliha Road on the southern border of Muwaileh, which include Thumbay Medical and Dental Specialty Clinic and Regal Medical Centre.

Muwaileh’s location right next door to University City ensure that it is popular for students. But the district also contains a large and growing cluster of options for K-12 and kindergarten education too. These include GEMS Westminster School Sharjah, GEMS Cambridge International Private School Sharjah, Providence English Private School, Delta English School, India International School and Rosary School Muwaileh. There’s also the International School of Creative Science, Wesgreen International School and Sharjah Ambassador School, while a SABIS school is currently being built in Aljada.
